What to do if your SASSA card is lost or stolen

    By TMP Team · Updated

    Quick answer

Call the Postbank call centre on 0800 53 54 55 straight away and report the card lost or stolen. Then get a new card at a Postbank service point, inside selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores, with your South African ID or temporary ID. The new card works on the same Postbank account that your grant is paid into.

    Ways to do this

Official channels only. We don't run any of them.

Your SASSA card is a Postbank debit card linked to the Postbank account that your grant is paid into. If you lose it or someone steals it, act quickly so that no one else can use it. You don’t lose your grant: a new card works on the same account.

    Report the card straight away

Call the Postbank call centre on 0800 53 54 55. Postbank says the call centre and its service points deal with lost and stolen cards, card reissues, PIN problems, missed payments and declined transactions.

Postbank asks grant beneficiaries to go to Postbank, not to a SASSA office, with questions about their SASSA card.

If someone stole your card, you can also report the theft at a police station and keep the case number.

    Get a new card

    1. Find your nearest Postbank service point. Dial *120*355# on your phone. Service points are inside selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores.
    2. Take your South African ID or temporary ID. Postbank asks for one of these.
    3. Ask about the fee. Postbank lists what a replacement card costs on its SASSA card fees page.
    4. Ask for help with your PIN at the service point if you need a new one.

If money was taken from your account

Call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 as soon as you notice, and report it at a police station. Keep the case number and the name of anyone you speak to.

If you still have an old SASSA gold card

Postbank replaced the old SASSA gold cards with Postbank Black Cards, and the gold cards stopped working after the switch-over ended. If you still have a gold card, take your ID to a Postbank service point for a Black Card. Postbank says the money on a gold card account moves to the new card’s account.

    Stay safe

    • A real Postbank card has “Postbank” printed on the front. Postbank says that any card that needs a form to be filled in before it works is not an official Postbank card.
    • Never tell anyone your PIN, and don’t give your card to a lender or anyone else to keep. SASSA says it will never ask for your PIN. Read our guide to SASSA scams.
    • Call Postbank only on the number above, which is on Postbank’s website, not a number in an SMS or on social media.
