SRD grant
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is temporary monthly help for adults with little or no income who get no other grant for themselves. You apply and check your status online. We are an independent guide, not SASSA.

Start here
- Apply for the SRD grant on the official SRD website.
- Check your SRD status and find out what each status means.
- If you were approved but have no payment date, or your identity check failed, see what you can do.
- If a month is pending, see why and when you need to act. If SASSA declined a month, read what the reason means, and appeal the decision if it is wrong.
The SRD grant is temporary: the national Budget decides how long it is funded and how much it pays. For the current amount, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
SASSA checks your application again every month, so your status can change from one month to the next. The SRD grant is paid separately from the other grants: see how SASSA pays.
