    How to use the checklist

    1. Type the post’s details if you want them on your printout. They are optional.
    2. Answer the two questions. They change what the checklist says about copies and about section F.
    3. Tick each step as you go, or print the list and tick it by hand.

Use one checklist for each post you apply for, as you use one Z83 for each post.

    Why these steps

    • The right form. The current Z83 has been in force since 1 January 2021. The DPSA told departments not to consider the old form, and that applicants must use the latest one.
    • Every section. The form has sections A to G and a declaration. In sections E, F and G you may refer to your CV, as long as the CV has been attached and gives the information.
    • Questions that don’t apply. The DPSA said in its clarification to departments that applicants may leave questions blank, or mark them N/A, when they don’t apply to them or to the post. Writing N/A shows you didn’t miss them.
    • Section F. The question about conditions that prevent re-appointment must be answered, except by public servants applying from their current job.
    • The signature. A department considers you only if the declaration is signed. The initials on page 2, where you sign, are not compulsory.
    • Copies. You don’t need to send copies of qualifications or other documents when you apply, only the Z83 and a detailed CV. Departments are encouraged to ask shortlisted candidates for certified copies. The form says a certification up to 6 months old must be accepted, unless the advert allows longer.

    What this checklist can’t do

    • It can’t check your form, or tell you whether you meet the requirements of a post.
    • It doesn’t know the advert. Some adverts add rules, such as completing every field or initialling both pages: follow the advert where it asks for more.
    • It doesn’t save anything. Print the list if you want to keep it.
