SRD status check and what each status means

    By TMP Team · Updated

    Quick answer

Check your SRD status on srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with. SASSA verifies you each month, so read the result for the month you need. Pending means not decided yet, approved means that month passed, and declined means it didn't, with a reason you can challenge.

    Ways to do this

Official channels only. We don't run any of them.

Your SRD status shows how SASSA assessed your application for a particular month. One word such as “approved” is not the whole answer: check which month it belongs to, whether a pay day is shown, and whether SASSA asks you to do something.

If you haven’t applied yet, start with how to apply for the SRD grant.

    How to check your status

    1. Type the SRD website address into your browser yourself: srd.sassa.gov.za.
    2. Open the application status section.
    3. Enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number you used to apply.
    4. Read the result for each month, and any instruction next to it.

Don’t type your ID number and cellphone number into other websites that offer to “check” your status. The two together are sensitive. A page with a SASSA logo is not automatically official: check that the address ends in sassa.gov.za.

Why your status can change from month to month

The SRD grant is not one approval that lasts. SASSA says applicants are verified each month, and you appeal each declined month on its own. So you may see approved for one month and declined for another. That doesn’t mean SASSA lost your application.

    What each status means

SASSA publishes a short list of SRD statuses and what to do about each one. In plain words:

Status What it means What you can do
Application complete Your application is in, and SASSA will verify you each month. Check your status each month.
Bank details pending SASSA has your application but no banking details or payment choice. Add your banking details on the SRD website.
Reapplication pending SASSA hasn’t received a reapplication from you. Apply again on the SRD website.
Pending (for a month) SASSA is still verifying that month. Check again later in the month. See SRD status pending.
Approved (for a month) You passed that month. Look at the pay day field. If it is empty, no payment has been processed yet.
Declined (for a month) You didn’t pass that month, and the reason is shown. If the reason is wrong, appeal that month.
Cancelled The grant is cancelled. You can ask to reinstate it on the SRD website.

When SASSA asks you to verify

SASSA’s grant booklet says that if your status is “referred”, you log in to the SRD website and request a link to update your information and complete the facial check (eKYC). If your status shows approved but not paid, you also request a verification link and complete the facial check. Do this only through the official website or a link from SASSA, never through someone on social media. See what to do when identity verification fails.

    Approved with no pay day

Approval and payment are separate steps. Your banking details may still need to be verified. See approved but no payment date.

    Declined

Read the reason for that month: SRD status declined explains each reason. If you think it is wrong, you can appeal the decision on srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals, the SRD appeals website of the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.

When your cellphone number has changed

SASSA uses your cellphone number to identify you and send you messages. South African ID holders can use “Change Mobile Number” on the SRD website, or call the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11. The booklet says a number change needs the facial check. Don’t open a second application to get around the problem. See how to change your SRD cellphone number.

    Keep a simple record

Write down the month you checked, the status, what you did and any reference number. Keep it private, and never write down your PIN or one-time PIN. It helps you see whether anything has changed and gives you the details when you contact SASSA.

    Status check scams

    • Never pay anyone to show your status or to “release” a payment.
    • Never share your bank PIN, card PIN, online banking password or a one-time PIN. SASSA says it will never ask for your PIN.
    • Don’t post screenshots that show your ID number, cellphone number, bank details or reference number.
    • Don’t install an app that lets someone else control your phone.
    • If you get a message about your status, open the official website yourself instead of tapping the link. Report fraud to SASSA on 0800 701 701.
